The range of products that are manufactured includes starter motors, alternators, windshield wiper motors and mechanisms, distributors, ignition coils, ignition keys, horns cooling fan motors, heating (ventilation) systems, lighting systems (headlights, stoplights and fog lights), air conditioners, and door and baggage compartment lock systems.

Magneti Marelli’s support for the firm Mako still continues in the form of agreements for licenses and know-how.

The firm Mako provides support to 68.4 % of the automotive industry in Turkey, by the number of car manufacturers and 87.6 % of the total number of cars produced. (OSD Bulletin, December 1997). Therefore, 65 % of its sales proceeds is obtained from its sales made to automotive manufacturers. In Turkey, there is not any local company whose range of products is as comprehensive as that of Mako’s. However, the firm has some important Competitors in the industry.

The firm’s average market share in the Turkey’s automotive industry is currently 50 %. However, this market share in respect of such electromechanical part as starter motors, alternators, windshield wiper motors etc. is higher (67.5 %) than this average percentage figure, due to the reason that its range of products is broader. Lighting and air conditioning systems are only used on new models, because of the difference in technology (100 % of the new Tofa? models and 80 % the new Renault models use such systems). 5 % of the firm’s 1997 sales proceeds has been obtained from exports to European countries.

The spare parts produced are distributed to all the users throughout the country by means of the main distribution companies and a network of dealers who operate under these companies. Spare parts sales and the sales to support the after sale service organizations make up 30 % of the firm’s proceeds from sales.

The firm Mako provides training for its customers as well as Apprentice Training Centers on proper maintenance and repair of its products, distributes maintenance/repair of its products, distributes maintenance/repair documents and provides training materials for them as well.

The Project Mako Koç 2000 Overall Perfection has been initiated in 1993 in order to promote the firm’s competitiveness, to be prepared for the changes in the market and to be able to handle such changes.

During the first year of this project, the policies of the firm Mako were based on the Koç Community’s objectives and principles, which are summarized in Vehbi Koç’s maxims and systematized with its strategic planning efforts. The road to the Overall Perfection, which takes place in the very center of the efforts to turn the quality into a full way of life philosophy/form, in all its activities, continues on its course, due to the fact that the firm, Mako was classified as a class “A” manufacturer by its customers during 1994, as a result of the system inspections performed by them, that these customers accepted many of its products without performing any tests, as a result of the process tests they performed earlier, that the self evaluations were started to be performed in accordance with the European Perfection Model, that the ISO 9002 Quality Assurance Certificates were received from both BVQI and T.S.E, during 1995, that an application was submitted to receive the Tüsiad Kalder’s National Quality Award during 1996, that some of its customers received Self-Evaluation training based on European Perfection model during 1997, and that the firm received the environmental incentive Award of the Istanbul Chamber of Industry during 1997.

Furthermore, the firm Mako provides training for its suppliers and treats the guided growth programs as part of its Overall Perfection Project.

The firm has adopted an approach which sets an example in the preservation of environment and natural resources, which approach is always improved on a systematic and continuing basis.

Therefore, the necessary measures are taken and training programs provided, so that the production processes would not pollute environment, that consumption would not turn into a waste of resources and that resulting waster could be reduced. Indeed, reducing the amount of cooling water by use of closed-circurt mechanism, discontinuation of use of processes where cyanide and asbestos are used, using natural gas in heating, modernization of the waste treatment facility, saving energy by way of radiant heating and exercising of noise control and prevention measures form the tangible examples of this effort.

In addition, the firm Mako, has also adopted development of after sale services and an operation guarantee system outside the basic industrial services by establishing a service network of authorized dealerships as a critical factor in achieving the Overall Perfection.

The first Authorized Service of the firm Mako was established in 1996 at Maslak, Istanbul. The current number of such service organizations is now 43 and the work for establishing ten more is underway. It is aimed to increase the number of such service stations up to 100 by the end of the year and up to 180, by the end of 1999.

These service stations are the points of service where maintenance and repairs of Mako products are to be performed on behalf of Mako, so as to allow the safe driving of the vehicles which incorporate these products. They are also service stations that find quick and proper solutions to problems, use original parts, provide a warranty for 6 months to one (1) year for its services and the parts they use, protect the consumers by providing standard service and allow them to safely drive their vehicles. These service stations are composed of two sections, one of them being spare parts department and the other workshop.
